Devin Mahina Injury: Broken Neck Forces Former BYU Starter Out

BYU tight end Devin Mahina has a broken bone in his neck that will keep him out of the 2011 season.

There's no easy way to say this: BYU Cougars tight end Devin Mahina has been practicing for almost two weeks with a broken bone in his neck. After X-rays and a CAT scan on Tuesday, the injury was diagnosed as one that will keep the sophomore out for the year and may require surgery.

He’d had neck issues during that time, so the news wasn’t a complete surprise. Still pretty awful.

Mahina started five games and caught 11 passes in 2010, averaging 10.7 yards per reception. He was contending with sophomore Austin Holt and the newly healthy Richard Wilson for that starting job again this season. Coach Bronco Mendenhall told media Mahina will likely redshirt.

The Cougars open with the Mississippi Rebels on Saturday.
