Pittsburgh Panthers sophomore defensive end Bryan Murphy has been ruled academically ineligible for the 2011-2012 season, according to reports from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Murphy will likely redshirt the year.

Murphy was a heralded four-star recruit out of the state of New Jersey, leading Don Bosco Preparatory High School to an undefeated season and a number one ranking in the USA Today Super 25 high school football poll in 2009. He was listed as the 16th rated defensive end in the country as a member of the class of 2010, weighing offers from Maryland, Louisville, and Colorado, among others, before electing to attend the University of Pittsburgh.

As a true freshman, Murphy missed most of the '10-‘11 season with a right foot fracture. His only playing experience came in the Panthers' BBVA Compass Bowl victory over the Kentucky Wildcats, during which he record one tackle as a back-up defensive lineman.
