USC Assistant Coach Willie Mack Garza Resigns For Personal Reasons

USC secondary coach Willie Mack Garza abruptly resigned on Thursday.

Citing personal reasons, USC Trojans secondary coach Willie Mack Garza announced his resignation on Thursday, the Los Angeles Times reports.

“I stepped down today from my coaching duties at USC,” Garza said in a statement released by the university. “I have some personal issues unrelated to USC that I need to address. I wish the Trojans the best and I am sorry I won’t be with them in what I know will be a very successful season.”

No. 25 USC opens its 2011 schedule at home against Minnesota on Saturday. Garza was absent from Wednesday’s practice for what head coach Lane Kiffin termed a “personal issue.” Kiffin used a text message to inform the players of Garza’s resignation, the Times reports.

The 42-year-old Garza played his college ball at Texas and has been coaching for 18 seasons. After stops at Western Michigan, Texas Christian, Tarleton State and North Dakota State, Garza joined Kiffin’s staff at Tennessee in 2009 and following him to USC in 2010. Tennessee was found to have committed 12 secondary violations during Kiffin’s brief tenure in Knoxville.
