Sean Mannion Establishes Sole Ownership Of Oregon State Starting Job

No team in the country has faced a rougher start than the Oregon St. Beavers. From scads of injuries to a quarterback dilemma that had redshirt freshman Sean Mannion and junior Ryan Katz splitting time, the ingredients were in place for the Beavers to start the year with consecutive crushing losses (35-0 to No. 8 Wisconsin, 29-28 to Division I-AA Sacramento State).

Head coach Mike Riley has established at least some stability by naming Mannion the full-time starter, commencing with this week’s game against UCLA.

Mannion has bested Katz in virtually every statistical category, including 66 to 52 in percent completion, 7.7 to 4.2 in yards per attempt -- plus Katz has thrown an interception. Neither has thrown a touchdown though, which is sad. Katz adds a little bit of a scrambling threat, but not enough to overcome those passing numbers.
