College Football Rankings Preview: LSU Makes Case For No. 1

The LSU Tigers went on the road and pounded another ranked opponent in convincing fashion. Should the Tigers leapfrog Oklahoma?

The fourth week of college football came to a close on Saturday night with another huge matchup involving the LSU Tigers. It wasn't a huge week of upsets, but there were plenty of top-ranked teams in action, along with matchups between teams in the top-25. And once again, the Tigers delivered on the road, pounding a strong opponent in convincing fashion.

With the AP and Coaches Poll set to be released on Sunday morning, here’s a look back at some of the matchups that mattered this week. Be sure to visit our College Football Saturday StoryStream for highlights and scores from around college football.

No. 1 Oklahoma 38, Missouri 28. The Tigers made this a game before falling victim to Landry Jones and Ryan Broyles. Still, LSU is nipping at Oklahoma's heels.

No. 2 LSU 47, West Virginia 21. I know teams atop the polls are rarely unseated without a loss, but LSU has a serious case for the top spot. Three wins over ranked teams away from home, with a cupcake sandwiched in between, is probably the best resume around. And the Tigers have looked dominant in the process.

No. 3 Alabama 38, No. 14 Arkansas 14. The top tier has separated itself, with Oklahoma, LSU and Alabama all building impressive resumes.

No. 4 Boise State 41, Tulsa 21. Another week, another easy win.

No. 6 Wisconsin 59, South Dakota 10. The Badgers are still taking care of business against overmatched opponents, and linger around the top-5 as a result.

No. 8 Oklahoma State 30, No. 9 Texas A&M 29. The Cowboys got their signature win while the Aggies just fell apart down the stretch, and will slide as a result.

No. 9 Nebraska 38, Wyoming 14. Closer than expected, but not bad for a true road game in Laramie.

No. 10 Oregon 56, Arizona 31. After the Week 1 hiccup, Oregon is playing like the Oregon we expected, and should quietly hang around the top-10.

No. 21 Clemson 35, No. 11 Florida State 30. Another huge win for Dabo Sweeney’s squad should have them moving up, while Florida State is still hungover from the Oklahoma loss.

No. 12 South Carolina 21, Vanderbilt 3. This should’ve been even more lopsided, but South Carolina shot itself in the foot repeatedly with turnovers.

No. 13 Virginia Tech 30, Marshall 10. The Hokies win sets up a huge matchup with Clemson next week.

No. 15 Florida 48, Kentucky 10. The Florida run game is still incredibly explosive.

No. 17 Baylor 56, Rice 31. Robert Griffin III: Still playing out of his mind.

No. 22 Michigan 28, San Diego State 7. Shouldn’t have been this close, but Michigan stalled after a strong first half.

Arizona State 43, No. 22 USC 22. That should do it for USC, but will Arizona State move into the top-25?

No. 24 Illinois 23, Western Michigan 20. Not sure if style points will factor into Illinois’ ranking, but this was as ugly as it gets.

No. 25 Georgia Tech 35, North Carolina 28. Georgia Tech is still rolling, and the Yellow Jackets offense is incredibly fun to watch.
