These things happen to the UTEP Miners. After jumping to a 14-0 lead, forcing a halftime tie, matching Case Keenum score-for-score throughout and nearly coming back from 14 points down in the fourth quarter to force another tie in the final minute, the young men from El Paso fell, 49-42, to the Houston Cougars.
Houston Vs. UTEP Final Score: Cougars Need 714 Yards To Beat Miners, 49-42
It took 714 yards worth of offense to put UTEP away, 471 from Keenum and 100 or more yards rushing each from Charles Sims and Michael Hayes. The Miners rode Joe Banyard's 243 yards rushing and a distribute-y attack led by Nick Lamaison, who found eight different receivers on his way to 267 yards.
Crazy to imagine what this game might have looked like had UTEP not given up two early turnovers. Houston had two free possessions and -- again -- put up 714 yards, and still needed Lamaison’s final throw into the end zone to come up just short.
