Kansas Football Players Rewarded With Candy Bars, Which Might Explain Some Things
Hands on a Hard Body is a 1997 documentary about a car dealership’s annual contest. For the prize of a Nissan Hardbody pickup, 24 competitors fight to outlast each other at keeping their hands on said truck while standing beneath the Texas sun.
We all have ways of dealing with challenges. In the film, one woman ends up speaking in tongues after days of standing in place. Another hopeful, Ronald McCowan, prefers blaring heat to rain, doesn’t sleep before entering the contest, is wearing terrible footwear and believes in the strengthening powers of Snickers candy bars. At one point he’s asked how many bars he’s eaten -- he loses count.
When a receiver gets a knockdown that leads to a scoring play, [Kansas assistant coach David] Beaty awards that player a king-sized candy bar at the position group's meeting Sunday.
"You take pride in that," KU sophomore Christian Matthews said, "and try to get the most candy."
To paraphrase Highlander, which the documentary’s grizzled soothsayer figure cites at one point, there can only be one wide receiver who gets the most candy.
