2012 Sugar Bowl Updates: Michigan Defense Standing Up When It Needs To

The second quarter of the 2012 Sugar Bowl began looking just like the first: Denard Robinson skipped and spewed passes all over the place, the Michigan Wolverines punted, the Virginia Tech Hokies converted a third-and-long, and David Wilson ran wild. This time he ran wild in the right direction, though, gaining 32 on a pitch from Logan Thomas.

One positive continuance for the Wolverines: that bend-don't-break defense, which stuffed a lunging Thomas on fourth down during what's normally an automatic first down:

That's the third Hokies red zone drives cut short. If not for their defense's performance deep in their own territory, the Wolverines could easily be down by 17 or more points right now, but the deficit remains just 6-0.

Virginia Tech has gained 185 yards to Michigan's 39, holding the ball for 10 more minutes.
