When Danny O'Brien agreed to play football for the Maryland Terrapins. When he did so, he signed on because he liked then-offensive coordinator James Franklin. Franklin left a few years ago to take over the Vanderbilt Commodores, who are in a different conference than Maryland and don't play Maryland in the near future. O'Brien got unhappy at Maryland and decided to transfer, wanting to re-join the person who recruiting him in Vanderbilt. Maryland blocked it for no discernible, though totally legit, reason.

Tuesday, O’Brien took the high road in his official statement on the situation:
After careful thought, contemplation, prayer, and consultation with my family, we have come to a consensus that it is in my best interest to continue my educational and athletic endeavors elsewhere.
This was a very difficult decision, one which I did not take lightly. I will forever cherish the friendships of teammates, academic and athletic support staff, fellow students, professors, and of course Terp fans.
Playing at Byrd Stadium and experiencing college life in College Park will remain as unforgettable experiences for the rest of my life. I certainly wish nothing but the best to the team next season and for years to come.
I look forward to completing one of my established goals of graduating from the University of Maryland this spring and becoming a proud alumnus of this great institution.
Wisconsin, Michigan State, USF, Stanford, Ole Miss, East Carolina and Arizona have all been rumored as possibilities for O’Brien. He could actually go play at Vanderbilt, though he would not be allowed to accept a scholarship there, or he could appeal. It’s unclear what his next move will be.
