The Iowa Hawkeyes promoted defensive back coach Phil Parker to the defensive coordinator post, head football coach Kirk Ferentz announced Tuesday.
Iowa Names Phil Parker As New Defensive Coordinator
Phil Parker takes over as the new defensive coordinator for the Iowa Hawkeyes after 13 seasons as secondary coach.
Parker has been the defensive back coach at Iowa for the past 13 seasons and has been a member of the Iowa staff since Ferentz took over as head coach. He was named by Rivals.com in March 2011 as a first-team member of its College Football Assistant Coach Dream Team.
He replaces Norm Parker, no relation, who retired following this past season.
Iowa was second in the Big Ten in pass efficiency defense (115.1) and interceptions (19) in 2010. They were also 11th in the nation in interceptions, four of which were returned for touchdowns.
Ferentz also announced the reassignment of Darrell Wilson from the linebackers coach position to replace Parker as Iowa’s secondary coach. Twelve-year staff member Reese Morgan will move from coaching the offensive line to the defensive line.
