Alabama Spring Game 2012: Nick Saban Doesn’t Think Spring Game Means Anything

A lot of football coaches take press conferences after their annual spring game, which wraps up spring practice, as their last chance to try to get the fan base excited for the upcoming season and hype up all their players. Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide won another national championship season last year, and drew 78,526 spectators to Bryant-Denny Stadium Saturday for their spring game, called the "Golden Flake A-Day Game." Saban doesn't need to do or say anything, and he proved it afterward.

“One thing that never happens in college football is no one ever has a bad spring and no one ever has a bad spring game,” Saban said. “We didn’t have one either. We had a lot of guys who made a lot of improvement this spring.”

Even if Saban has no need for analyzing spring game performances publicly, it will be hard for Tide fans not to be encouraged by the performance of freshman running back T.J. Yeldon, who was named the game’s MVP after accumulating 179 total yards (88 rushing, 91 receiving).

A.J. McCarron, the returning start at quarterback, played decently, going 29-42 for 304 yards and two touchdowns, but he threw three interceptions. He didn't take much away from the proceedings either, other than he liked to get a little crazy.

“It was a fun day,” he said. “This game is mainly for the fans. You go out there and you try and make plays and things happen where you probably wouldn’t do them in the game. I mean it’s a scrimmage, at the end of the day it’s for the fans and we just want to kind of make it fun for them and make some crazy plays at the same time that we probably wouldn’t do in a real game. I had fun, like coach always says, ‘Just have fun,’ and I had a lot of fun today. It was just fun joking around with the guys and getting to mess with them.”
