Bowl Games Still Spawning, Despite Impending College Football Playoffs

College football will have a playoff beginning in 2014, but the bowl game system will survive in some form. Four to six bowls could even be directly included in the playoff bracket somehow. As for the survivability of other bowls, all we really need to know is that they’re trying to start up a new SEC bowl in St. Louis:

“If there’s (35) bowls, we can’t join as Bowl 36,” he said. “We have to get in at a level where we don’t have to plead with the community to support the event. ... We can’t scrape this thing together and keep our fingers crossed that we can grow it. We have to get in at a solid level.”

A bowl in St. Louis would make more sense than bowls in Shreveport, St. Petersburg and Mobile (no offense), so perhaps a brush-clearing brought on by playoffs and a seven-win bowl eligibility requirement would make room for a couple new games in bigger markets. But still! What a time to talk about starting a bowl game.

While we’re here, let’s watch some college football videos from SB Nation’s new YouTube channel together:
