The Notre Dame Fighting Irish got some bad news Thursday morning as starting quarterback Tommy Rees and linebacker Carlo Calabrese were arrested early in the morning. According to the report, the two Notre Dame players were booked into St. Joseph County jail around 1 a.m.

According to (Sgt. Bill) Redman, Rees was arrested for public intoxication, resisting law enforcement, minor consumption and battery to law enforcement -- a felony charge.

Police say that Rees was pepper-sprayed prior to being taken into police custody. Calabrese was arrested for disorderly conduct

Calabrese was released on a $250 bond at 3:42 a.m. according to the report and both are due back in court on May 17. Rees started for the Irish most of last season at quarterback, but was in competition with three other players for the starting job this fall.

Notre Dame issued the following statement on the arrest:

“The University is aware of this incident and is confident that it will be handled in a prompt and professional manner through the criminal justice system. Internal discipline is handled privately, in accord with our own policies and federal law.”
