Michigan’s 2014-16 Schedules Include Expected Appalachian State Rematch

In 2007, Appalachian State shocked the world by defeating the fifth-ranked Michigan Wolverines, 34-32, in Ann Arbor. It was the first time a Division I FCS team had ever defeated a ranked FBS team, making it the biggest upset in college football history.

Seven years later, the two teams will meet again, as the Wolverines made the curious choice to invite the Mountaineers back to the Big House on Aug. 30 to open the 2014 season. The rematch is one of 10 non-conference games Michigan announced Wednesday for the 2014-16 seasons.

After facing Appalachian State, Michigan’s 2014 schedule includes a trip to Notre Dame on Sept. 6 before home dates against Miami (Ohio) on Sept. 13 and Utah on Sept. 20.

In 2015, Michigan travels to Utah on Sept. 3 to play the first Thursday night game in school history. The next three games will be at home, with Notre Dame visiting on Sept. 12, Oregon State on Sept. 19 and UNLV on Sept. 26.

The 2016 schedule is still a work in progress, with opponents on Sept. 3 and Sept. 24 still to be determined. But Michigan will travel to South Bend to face Notre Dame on Sept. 10 followed by a game at home against Colorado on Sept. 17.

Although the 2017 schedule is still unknown, Michigan announced plans to take a two-year hiatus from its series with Notre Dame in 2018 and 2019 before resuming the rivalry.
