The Virginia Cavaliers have announced their starting quarterback for their first game. Incumbent starter Michael Rocco will start for the Cavaliers on Sept. 1 against the Richmond Spiders. Phillip Sims, who was granted a waiver by the NCAA after transferring from the Alabama Crimson Tide and is eligible to play right away, will start No. 2 on the depth chart.
Michael Rocco Named Virginia Starter Over Alabama Transfer
Virginia quarterback Michael Rocco will start for the Cavaliers against the Richmond Spiders on Sept. 1. Alabama transfer Phillip Sims is No. 2 on the depth chart, but could see some action against Richmond.

Rocco is coming off a season where he threw for 2,671 yards, completing 60.7 percent of his passes, scoring 13 touchdowns but tossing 12 interceptions.
Brian J. Leung of Streaking the Lawn says that it won’t take much for Cavaliers fans to start demanding that Sims play. He even acknowledges that Sims could play against Richmond.
The resolution to this “quarterback controversy” won’t give fans -- or Rocco -- much rest, though. It won’t take much more than a hiccup to get Sims involved, and I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw some playing time for Sims this Saturday against Richmond, to get him warmed up, if nothing else.
