BYU cornerback Robbie Buckner returned to practice with his team last week after missing most of summer workouts and fall camp with an undisclosed medical situation. After showing his worth on the field and working up to second-string on the depth chart, it was revealed today why Buckner left the team: he was receiving treatment for testicular cancer.

BYU cornerback Robbie Buckner has returned to the practice field and is poised to contribute after summer treatment for testicular cancer.

The senior was expected to have the edge in BYU’s lone off-season cornerback battle until mysteriously leaving the program in June. Now, he has returned to practice and stepped in front of two passes for interceptions in his first two days at practice.
Buckner was grateful to be back, and reported he is in remission:
“Everyone from Coach (Bronco) Mendenhall, Coach (Nick) Howell, my wife, my family, my sister, the team, the trainer - I couldn’t imagine going through everything without all of their support ... Fortunately the cancer is in remission and I’ve been cleared to play by doctors, and I’m feeling great.”
Buckner received the call to return to the team when another cornerback, Cameron Comer, left the team for personal reasons, leaving room on the 105-man roster for Buckner's return after he was cleared by doctors to play. While he isn't slated to start, the 5'10" corner from Ashdown, Arkansas looks to be first off the bench if another corner goes down.
BYU opens the season on Thurs., Aug. 30 when it hosts Mike Leach and Washington State.
