Both the Texas Longhorns and Wyoming Cowboys finished with 8-5 records in 2011, and both will be looking to push themselves a bit higher in the standings as they open their 2012 seasons with a game at Texas Memorial Stadium.

The Wyoming Cowboys will travel to face the Texas Longhorns in the first game of the season for both teams on Sept. 1.Follow @SBNationCFB

For the Cowboys, the opener against Texas will represent one of their biggest games of the year. Wyoming will likely win out its Mountain West schedule with a solid returning team from last season, including dual-threat QB Brett Smith -- so games against a higher echelon of competition like Texas will be very important in their bid for a good bowl at the end of the year. If they can get by the Horns, it may be the start to one of the best seasons in team history.
Wyoming would seem to have the edge in the quarterbacking competition with Smith at the helm. Texas has selected David Ash to start the game, who threw four touchdowns and eight interceptions in 2011 while sharing time with Case McCoy. Regardless, Texas is still favored to win the game by a sizable margin thanks to its superior defense and running game. It would be a very big upset if the Cowboys were to march into Texas Memorial Stadium and escape with a 1-0 record.
Game time, TV channel: 8 p.m. ET, Longhorn Network
Point spread: Texas favored by 29 points.
