Nebraska Football: Starting DT Quits Over Apparent Lack Of Status

Nebraska Cornhuskers defensive tackle Chase Rome has left the team because his personal goals did not match those of the team, coach Bo Pelini said.

Nebraska defensive tackle Chase Rome has left the Cornhuskers after having a disagreement with coach Bo Pelini about his place on the team. Via the Associated Press:

Pelini told reporters after practice Wednesday that Rome’s “personal goals and personal perception of where he should be on this football team doesn’t match the team goals.”

The 6’3, 285-pound starting tackle had four tackles through two games this season.

The news comes after Nebraska got beaten up in the trenches by the UCLA Bruins in a 36-30 loss. UCLA running back Johnathan Franklin put up 217 yards and an 8.3 yards per rush average, and quarterback Brett Hundley ran for 53 yards on 12 carries against the Cornhuskers.

That left Pelini and defensive coordinator John Papuchis saying they’d consider lineup changes across the board, mostly to get the team speed up to par after missed tackles plagued the Cornhuskers through two games. Nebraska is 115th nationally in rush defense and 96th in total defense after losing to the Bruins.
