The 2012 college football rankings are posed for some shaking up this week with some great matchups between top-25 opponents. Here are the results for all the top 25 matchups.
College Football Rankings, Week 5: FSU, Notre Dame, Kansas State Rise
The Florida State Seminoles, Kansas State Wildcats, and Notre Dame Fighting Irish are poised to move up after strong Week 4 showings in the 2012 college football season.Follow @SBNationCFB
#1 Alabama had no trouble at all dispatching Florida Atlantic 40-7. The Crimson Tide held the Owls to six first downs and 110 total yards of offense while piling up 503 yards and a 40-0 lead into the fourth quarter.
#2 LSU scraped by Auburn 12-10. LSU missed a few opportunities and turnovers to keep Auburn in it. The LSU defense was generally dominant, holding Auburn’s offense to 183 total yards and nine first downs.
#3 Oregon smashed #22 Arizona 49-0. The Wildcats couldn’t capitalize on six red zone opportunities, and the Ducks eventually wore Arizona down with 36 second half points, including two pick-sixes.
#4 Florida State rallied from a 31-21 deficit to roll off four straight touchdowns and eventually beat #10 Clemson 49-27. Both Oregon and LSU have a good shot at moving up the polls this week.
#5 Georgia dispatched Vanderbilt handily 48-3. Aaron Murray completed 75% of his passes for 10.4 yards per pass attempt, Todd Gurley rushed for 130 yards, and the Bulldogs defense only allowed two Commodore third down conversions.
#6 Oklahoma fell to #15 Kansas State 24-19. The Sooner offense was stifled by three critical turnovers, and the Wildcats would score ten critical points off those turnovers.
#7 South Carolina got a perfect performance from Connor Shaw in a 31-10 victory over Missouri, as the Gamecock QB completed 95% of his passes and two touchdowns. Shaw completed 19 straight passes at one point.
#8 West Virginia held off Maryland for a 31-21 victory thanks to a monster game from Tavon Austin; Austin hauled in 13 passes from Geno Smith for 179 yards and three touchdowns.
#11 Notre Dame had another strong defensive performance for the second straight week, this time keeping Denard Robinson and Michigan out of the end zone thanks to four interceptions for a 13-6 victory.
#13 USC had a thorough, boring and methodical 27-9 victory over California. The Trojans put up plenty of yards and stifled Cal’s offense in their ninth straight victory in the series.
#14 Florida cruised to another victory over Kentucky, this time winning 38-0. The Gators have not lost to to Kentucky in the last 26 meetings between the two squads.
#16 Ohio State struggled yet again at home. The Buckeyes fell behind 9-0 at home to UAB before rallying behind the rushing of Jordan Hall and Braxton Miller to spur the Ohio State offense onward in a 29-16 win.
#17 TCU took advantage of four Virginia turnovers to win 27-7, and Casey Paschall completed over 65% of his passes and threw two touchdown passes to keep the Horned Frogs eternally on top of the Cavaliers in a 27-7 victory.
#19 UCLA fell at home to Oregon State in the Rose Bowl 27-20, as the Beavers run defense stifled Johnathan Franklin while Sean Mannion made some big throws.
#20 Louisville had struggles, but eventually held off FIU 28-21. Teddy Bridgewater didn't perform well, but the Cardinals had four long methodical drives that ended with them punching it in the end zone.
#21 Michigan State was down at halftime to Eastern Michigan 7-3, and only managed two field goals in the third quarter. The Spartans won thanks to Le'Veon Bell piling up 253 rushing yards on 36 carries and a touchdown.
#23 Mississippi State were hardly impressive in beating South Alabama 30-10 (they had nearly equal totals in yardage), but forced three turnovers.
#24 Boise State held off BYU thanks to the Cougars deciding to go for two on their extra point attempt. Big mistake there.
#25 Nebraska got back Rex Burkhead, although it's unlikely they needed it in their 73-7 rout of hapless Idaho State.
