Hawkeyes head coach Kirk Ferentz already watched his offense sputter time and time again against a defense hailing from the Mid-American Conference, and will need senior quarterback James Vandenberg to produce much more than the measly 3.91 yards per attempt he posted in the opener.
Currently on the winning side of the rivalry after last season’s 44-41 thriller in Ames, the Cyclones will also enter Saturday’s showdown with a Week 1 victory of their own after coming from behind to beat Tulsa, 38-23. Iowa State racked up 281 yards through the air and 160 on the ground in the balanced victory, and should have plenty of confidence on the defensive side of the ball as well after recording three turnovers against a talented Tulsa offense.
