If there was a single word to define the defensive end class in the 2013 NFL Draft, it’s upside. Some of the best players at the position are also the biggest risks in the draft.
Damontre Moore was unblockable at times this season. He’s fast enough to play right end in the NFL, but versatile enough to rush from the inside or standing up as a linebacker. The risk on Moore is his size. He’s somewhat light for the position, which may scare off some traditional 4-3 teams.
The risk in Bjoern Werner of Florida State is that he’s only played football for five years. He may not have that elite first step, but he makes up for it with athleticism around the edge. Dion Jordan is equally athletic, but he was used as much in coverage as he was as a blitzer. LSU’s Sam Montgomery is a powerful, hustle pass rusher but his stats just weren’t there this season. Ezekiel Ansah of BYU may actually be the best of the bunch, but he’s the rawest and least refined.
