Notre Dame tight end Tyer Eiftert entered the 2012 college football season as unquestionably college football’s best tight end. A Mackey Award and a national title berth later, Eifert remains at the top. Eifert is the standout of the Irish offense with his playmaking ability and athleticism in the seam. He’s a big target at 6-foot-6 and 251 pounds, but has the jump ability to make difficult catches.
Eifert is a certain first-round pick, and Stanford’s Zach Ertz may be as well. Ertz wasn’t as consistent as Eifert this season, but has impressive raw talent.
Should many of the juniors come out this year, the tight end class has a nice balance of pass catchers and blockers. Florida’s Jordan Reed is purely a pass-catching Joker tight end, but Michigan State’s Dion Sims and Alabama’s Michael Williams are more traditional tight ends.
The depth among senior tight ends is impressive as well. Ryan Otten of San Jose State, Ryan Griffin of Connecticut and Jack Doyle of Western Kentucky should all provide good positional value in the middle rounds of the draft.
