2014 NFL Draft guard rankings

Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

While we may not see two of the fist 10 picks in the draft be guards, as we did this year, the position has depth. That depth is particularly strong at the top with the first four players ranked being likely top 75 selections.

The best of the bunch is mammoth Baylor guard Cyril Richardson. The senior first made a name for himself playing left tackle while Robert Griffin III was the starting quarterback at Baylor. But in the past two seasons, he's come along as a dominant player on the inside. Richardson often has the strength advantage over opposing defensive linemen and enough athleticism to play in space.

Stanford's David Yankey has the edge on Richardson in pure athleticism. Teams that prefer picking guards who can pull or get on the second level will prefer Yankey.

The depth at the position should be strong on Day 3 of the draft. If he's healthy, a team could get an immediate starter in Florida's powerful blocker Jon Halapio. Miami's Brandon Linder is another sneaky-good late-round player to keep an eye on.
