2014 NFL Draft order: Movement in the top 10

The Texans continue to hold the No. 1 pick, but the other picks at the top have changed dramatically.

After losing last Thursday to the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Houston Texans maintain a strong hold on the top pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.

The rest of the top 10 is not as settled. The Jaguars went from having the No. 2 pick last week to No. 5 this week. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers also dropped in the order after a win, going from No. 5 to No. 9.

The draft order is determined by record. For teams with the same record, strength of schedule is the first tiebreaker. If those are the same, division record is factored in, but only if the teams play in the same division. If not, it's conference record, but only if they play in the same conference. If the teams are still tied, a coin is flipped at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Head-to-head results do not factor into the draft order.

In the season, though, a draft order is a complete hypothetical. The season isn’t ending right now. The strength of schedule for this draft order uses the complete season strength of schedule. Others may use strength of schedule through games played.

But it's a hypothetical, so how about a quick what-if involving the Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers? The two teams played to a tie earlier in the season.

If the Vikings lost to the Packers instead of tying, they would have the No. 3 pick right now and not No. 4. If the Vikings beat the Packers instead of tying, they would have the No. 7 pick.

There will be high drama in Week 15 with the Washington Redskins playing at the Atlanta Falcons. Talk about game of the week. Don't forget, the Redskins' pick (currently No. 2) goes to the St. Louis Rams as part of the Robert Griffin III trade.
