NFL Draft 2013: Montee Ball wants to be ‘3-down back’ in NFL

In his final two seasons with the Wisconsin Badgers, Ball accumulated 3,753 rushing yards and 55 touchdowns.

Montee Ball was one of the most productive running backs in the history of college football during his time with the Wisconsin Badgers, but that hasn't translated into top draft stock. In the latest draft rankings from SB Nation's Dan Kadar, Ball ranks as the ninth best running back prospect and wasn't able to crack the top 100 big board.

While he racked up 77 career touchdowns for the Badgers, critics have said that he doesn’t do anything special and doesn’t excel in any particular area. A distinction that Ball took exception to in a chat with Pat Yasinskas of ESPN:

"Curtis Martin and Terrell Davis,'' Ball said. "People said the same thing about them. They didn't do anything special. Well, they both ended up having pretty good careers.''

Ball, 22, will have a chance to make an impression on teams during the 2013 NFL Combine, scheduled to begin on Wednesday. Among the neediest teams at the running back position are the St. Louis Rams, Atlanta Falcons, Cincinnati Bengals, Pittsburgh Steelers and San Diego Chargers; however, Ball isn't too worried about what team selects him.

“I don’t have any dream scenario of what team I want to go to or what kind of offense I want to be a part of,” Ball said. “I just want to go somewhere and get a chance to be a three-down back and show what I can do.”

In his final two seasons as the starter for the Badgers, Ball accumulated 3,753 rushing yards and 55 touchdowns. The Wisconsin Pro Day is scheduled for March 6.
