Lions GM reaching out to help Titus Young

US PRESSWIRE

Former Detroit Lions second round pick Titus Young is at a crossroads of his football career after being released by the St. Louis Rams this month and clearing waivers.

But the man who drafted him, general manager Martin Mayhew, is reaching out to help the troubled wide receiver.

“I want to help him deal with his problems, whatever they are,” Mayhew said at the NFL Combine on Friday.

Although Mayhew said the Lions have “closed the door” on bringing Young back, he has reached out to his family to help. Even though he’s not a part of the Lions franchise, Mayhew said he would do whatever it takes to help.

“It was a unique situation,” Mayhew said. “He didn’t have those issues in 2011. We wish him the best and support him anyway possible.”

In the 2011 draft, the Lions passed on receivers like Torrey Smith and Randall Cobb to select Young out of Boise State with the 44th pick in the draft.

“It’s very disappointing,” Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said Thursday. “He’s a guy we drafted in the second round. He’s a guy that physically was very productive for us and looked like he was going to be a very important part of our offense. But in the grand scheme of things it wasn’t all physically what you could do on the field. As a result, he’s no longer with us. We’ve moved on.”
