2013 NFL Combine: Quanterus Smith may not workout for scouts before April’s draft

Smith tore his ACL in November and still has at least three months of rehab to go.

Western Kentucky defensive end Quanterus Smith was playing the best football all of life when tore his ACL this past November.

The injury not only cost him the rest of his senior season with the Hilltoppers, it could cost him the chance to workout for NFL scouts before April’s draft.

Smith had surgery on Nov. 29 and is three months into his rehab. He said on Saturday at the NFL Scouting Combine that he was at least three months away from finishing his rehab and did not seem confident about his ability to perform a full workout before April’s NFL Draft. He said his pro day is a long shot.

“It was very frustrating, but it is what it is,” Smith said.

The injury was especially frustrating for Smith because of how well he was playing. He had two tackles for loss in his last game and racked up three sacks against Alabama earlier in the year. Smith thinks that game helped validate the hard work he put in over the summer.

“It was a good game for me,” Smith said. “Kind of got in the zone a little bit. Seeing the opportunity to play against those guys, I tried to take advantage of it. Alabama helped me solidify (my game) in other people’s eyes.”

Smith said he’s comfortable playing in a 3-4 at outside linebacker and thinks he could excel in that role. But right now, he’s 100-percent focused on his rehab.

“A lot of people told me just keep working hard,” Smith said. “You know cause they see me out there and see me working on the field trying to get my game right. They tell me keep doing what you’re doing and it will pay off.”
