Mel Kiper’s updated mock draft has Eric Fisher going top 10

USA TODAY Sports

ESPN NFL Draft analyst Mel Kiper put out his second 2013 mock draft today.

Most notably, Kiper sticks with Luke Joeckel as the No. 1 pick to the Kansas City Chiefs. Kiper’s first six picks remain the same.

The first difference comes with the seventh pick. He initially had guard Chance Warmack going to the Arizona Cardinals but has flipped it to Senior Bowl star offensive tackle Eric Fisher of Central Michigan.

Here’s what he has to say about the pick:

This is one of the spots where you could see a QB come off the board, but at this stage a QB taken at No. 7 would be a significant reach. Until we see major strides by one of the QB options, Arizona is better off adding a key piece it can start right away and looking for a QB in Round 2, or trading up into the late first.

Kiper has Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o dropping from Buffalo and the eighth pick to 13th and the Buccaneers. He gives the Bills linebacker Alec Ogletree instead. Ogletree’s placement in mock drafts has fluctuated since the college football season ended. He’s just as likely to go this high as he is to land in the back end of the first round.

Once again, Kiper has no quarterbacks being taken in the first round. That also happened in his last mock draft. Here’s his explanation:

For teams like Kansas City and Arizona, the value of the pick of a QB in the top 10 just doesn’t make a lot of sense, but they could be in play to trade up and take a player like Matt Barkley, Geno Smith or Mike Glennon somewhere late in Round 1.

There are no real surprise choices in Kiper’s mock draft. At this point of the NFL Draft season, things are stating to settle a little bit. It’ll get jumbled again after the NFL Combine. Matthew Fairburn and I will have a collaborative mock draft on Monday morning. You can check out the latest from Fairburn here.

Oh, and before someone says “who cares about Mel Kiper, he sucks,” nobody made you read this. Grow up.
