Geno Smith pro day results: QB impresses at West Virginia pro day

Smith was reportedly sharp at West Virginia’s pro day Thursday.

USA TODAY Sports

Former West Virginia Mountaineers quarterback Geno Smith is widely believed to be one of the 2013 NFL Draft's top prospects at the all-important position. He impressed the gathering of scouts -- 28 of the 32 NFL teams were represented -- at the school's pro day on Thursday, according to a report from Jeff Reynolds with NFLDraftScout.com.

Smith reportedly went through a series of 64 plays, completing 60 passes out of those with two wide receiver drops. Throughout the workout, which was tailored to Smith’s skill set by his personal coach and Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Chris Weinke, Smith showcased his ability to throw a beautiful deep ball.

Here’s Reynolds, from his report:

“Most impressive in the workout was his downfield touch and accuracy, zip on the move and balance throughout his compact release.”

Reynolds also importantly noted that one of Smith’s biggest next tasks in this long screening process will be to show NFL teams that he can perform just as well in settings that aren’t so controlled and geared directly towards prearranged scenarios.

Smith is the top-rated quarterback prospect in Dan Kadar of SB Nation’s position rankings for April’s upcoming draft.
