NFL Draft 2013: Andy Reid says Chiefs considering 8-10 players for top pick

The new Chiefs head coach wouldn’t rule out Geno Smith as a possibility for the first overall selection.

USA TODAY Sports

With fewer than 40 days remaining before the Kansas City Chiefs go on the clock with the first pick of the 2013 NFL Draft, the selection is far from decided, as new Chiefs head coach Andy Reid told Ian Rapoport of NFL Network that there are 8-10 players that will be evaluated as possibilities for the first pick.

Among those players could be West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith, despite the acquisition of Alex Smith from the San Francisco 49ers.

A quarterback has been selected with the first overall selection in each of the last four drafts and 10 of the last 12, but the selection of Smith would certainly be a shocking one for the Chiefs. The team already paid a high amount to acquire Smith via trade and signed Chase Daniel to a three-year, $10 million deal to play as Smith's backup.

Reid also told Rapoport that Smith was the plan all along for the Chiefs and brushed off the suggestion that a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles for Nick Foles wasn't a scenario the team pursued.

With the release of offensive tackle Eric Winston, most expect the Chiefs to use the first pick in the draft to take a left tackle to protect Smith. In the latest mock draft from SB Nation's Matthew Fairburn, the Chiefs are projected to take Texas A&M's Luke Joeckel.
