2013 NFL mock draft: Geno Smith to Jacksonville Jaguars

Could the Jags pick a Top 10 quarterback just two years after taking Blaine Gabbert?

USA TODAY Sports

Less than two years ago, the Jacksonville Jaguars were spending a Top 10 pick on a highly touted quarterback. With a new owner, general manager and head coach in place since then, however, history may be poised to repeat itself. In the 2013 SB Nation NFL Writers’ Mock Draft, that’s precisely what’s happened.

Geno Smith, West Virginia QB 6'2" 218 SR

Alfie Crow: "The Jaguars are entering a new era with a new head coach and general manager that have zero ties to players currently on the roster, including 2011 first-round pick Blaine Gabbert. Gabbert hasn't shown much in his first two years, and new general manager David Caldwell is in a position where he can take the top quarterback in the class, much like Atlanta did in 2008 with Matt Ryan when Caldwell was the director of college scouting. The team sent essentially their entire front office to watch Smith's pro day and broke down film with him for 90 minutes afterwards. He can come in immediately and compete for the starting job and likely improve the team's quarterback play."

Here’s our own Dan Kadar to break down the pick:

Jacksonville is most likely weighing a decision between Smith and a player on defense that can line up at the Leo position. As long as the front office is decided on moving on from Gabbert, it shouldn’t a long discussion on the two positions. There are a lot of very good players available to play Leo. But no one position helps a team win more games than a quarterback. Smith is the best in the draft this year by a fair margin.

We've got one more pick to announce today; the Oakland Raiders, repped by Silver and Black Pride, will make the No. 3 overall pick at 3PM ET.
