NFL Draft 2013: Chiefs will bring in Dee Milliner for visit

Milliner could be the first defensive back to be taken in the first four picks in the NFL Draft since Charles Woodson was selected fourth overall in 1998.

Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

The Kansas City Chiefs, owners of the first pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, will host the consensus top cornerback in the draft, Dee Milliner, for a private workout, according to a report from NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, although he may still be limited by a shoulder surgery he underwent following the 2013 NFL Combine.

Milliner, 21, was a consensus All-American in his final season with the Alabama Crimson Tide after stepping into the starting lineup following the departure of Dre Kirkpatrick and DeQuan Menzie. However, Milliner is fighting history as the last time a cornerback was selected first overall was in 1956 when the Pittsburgh Steelers selected Gary Glick. The last defensive back taken in the top four was Charles Woodson in the 1998 NFL Draft.

B.J. Kissel of Arrowhead Pride doesn’t think the selection of Milliner would be a bad one for the Chiefs, though, as Kissel argued that the cornerback would fit well in the Kansas City defense:

As far as how Milliner would fit within the Chiefs defense ... I actually think he’d be a great fit. New Chiefs defensive coordinator Bob Sutton has said that he wants to run an ‘attacking’ defense. (Although I think most DCs say this). But he wants to bring pressure from anywhere and everywhere. Having cornerbacks that can press and get up on the line of scrimmage to disrupt timing and routes is key to this style of defense.

Milliner could also be a target for the Chiefs in the event that they find a trade partner and are able to move out of the first spot in the draft order. However, the Chiefs could have a crowded field at the position after signing both Dunta Robinson and Sean Smith in free agency to join Brandon Flowers in the secondary.
