NFL Draft 2013 rumors: 49ers, Dolphins, Vikings candidates to trade up

The San Francisco 49ers, Miami Dolphins and Minesota Vikings could be looking to trade up in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft, provided they can get a fair price.

USA TODAY Sports

The 2013 NFL Draft will inevitably feature a team or two looking to trade up for a shot at a top draft pick. Every team is a candidate, provided they see even greater value in a player than others. However, the San Francisco 49ers, Miami Dolphins and Minnesota Vikings may be the likeliest candidates to move up the draft board, according to NFL.com's Daniel Jeremiah.

The Niners simply have too many picks. With 14 selections in this year’s draft, it’d make sense for San Francisco to try and trade a few for a better quality pick. Otherwise, the team could be forced to leave excess rookies by the wayside when rosters are set just before the start of the regular season. The 49ers could still use an impact defensive tackle, which is potentially the strongest position group of this year’s draft class. There should be plenty of quality available in the first 10-15 picks, provided the Niners can make a move.

Meanwhile, Jeremiah sees the Dolphins potentially moving up to snag one of the draft's three elite left tackles. After letting Jake Long walk, Miami is in desperate need of an elite pass protector. Luke Joeckel, Eric Fisher and Lane Johnson are all considered Top 10 overall prospects by many, and could be unavailable to the Dolphins unless they trade up from the No. 12 spot.

The Vikings are still in need of a wide receiver or two, even after signing Greg Jennings away from the Green Bay Packers. They have two first-round picks at No. 23 and No. 25, but unfortunately for Minnesota, the St. Louis Rams are also expected to target a wideout and are selecting at No. 16 and No. 22. If the Vikes truly want to snag the likes of Tavon Austin or Cordarrelle Patterson, they may need to get aggressive.

Jeremiah mentions the Philadelphia Eagles, Cleveland Browns and New England Patriots as potential trade-down candidates. A trade up to No. 4 or No. 6 with the Eagles or Browns, respectively, could be a possibility for the Dolphins' purposes. Such a move might be a bit too bold for the 49ers and Vikings, though teams lower in the order could certainly be interested in a trade for the right price.
