NFL Draft rankings 2013: Barkley tops Pro Football Weekly’s quarterback list

After an impressive pro day, Matt Barkley is Pro Football Weekly’s best available quarterback in the NFL Draft.

US PRESSWIRE

The quarterback prospects of the 2013 NFL Draft have long been considered a muddled group with a relatively clear leader in West Virginia's Geno Smith. Then the USC Trojans held their pro day workouts on Wednesday, and Matt Barkley impressed. The question is, has anything really changed?

Now, the magnitude of Barkley’s pro day will of course vary, but one well-respected outfit, Pro Football Weekly, released their rankings of the top six quarterback prospects via Twitter on Thursday, and Barkley was slotted at No. 1. So, yeah, one could assume his pro day workout had some sort of an impact.

After the top-ranked Barkley, Pro Football Weekly's list looks like this: Ryan Nassib (Syracuse) at No. 2, E.J. Manuel (Florida State) at No. 3, Tyler Wilson (Arkansas) at No. 4, Zac Dysert (Miami (Ohio)) at No. 5 and Smith at No. 6.

For comparison's sake, SB Nation's Dan Kadar has the top six quarterbacks ranked as such: Smith, Barkley, North Carolina State's Mike Glennon, Wilson, Tennessee's Tyler Bray and Nassib (Manuel and Dysert are ranked seventh and eighth, respectively). Additionally, SB Nation's latest mock draft only has one signal-caller, Smith, going in the first round -- at No. 2 overall to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

What it means, potentially, is that the more Barkley can grow on teams leading up to April’s draft, the more the top spot in the quarterback group may be up in the air. The rest could go in any which way. Fit, need and scheme are going to be just as important in determining who goes where, too. If this year’s quarterback class is proving to be anything, though, it’s that, in the absence of an obvious choice it’s all just a matter of opinion, more than ever.
