Bears interested in TE Zach Ertz, per report

Chicago is reportedly keep on the Stanford tight end. Could the Bears favor Zach Ertz over Tyler Eifert?

Doug Pensinger

The Chicago Bears have been linked to selecting a tight end in the draft for quite some time, with many mock drafts having them select Tyler Eifert out of Notre Dame with the 20th overall pick. However, Chicago is not only going to narrow their sights on Eifert, and the Bears are reportedly also interested in Stanford tight end Zach Ertz.

The Bears have not been able to find a suitable replacement at the position since losing Greg Olsen to the Carolina Panthers two seasons ago. Former starter Kellen Davis, now with the Cleveland Browns, was not much of an offensive threat during his two years on the first-string offense. Davis had just 37 catches for 435 yards over the last two seasons.

Ertz is seen by many analysts as the second-best tight end prospect in the draft class, though there are some differing opinions on how the prospects line up behind Eifert. A poor showing at the combine has dropped Ertz out of the first round for some experts, but the 6’5, 244-pound blocker and receiver could still be a viable option for Chicago at the end of the first round.

Olsen is the only tight end that the Bears have drafted in the first round since 1990, when he was the 31st-overall pick in the 2007 draft. It seems possible now that Chicago is willing to go higher than that this season.
