NFL Draft 2013 rumors: Vikings looking to trade up

The Minnesota Vikings are interested in moving up in the draft to grab a wide receiver or cornerback.

Ronald Martinez

The Minnesota Vikings are interested in moving up in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft according to Ian Rapoport. The Vikings currently hold two first round picks, No. 23 and No. 25 overall, and are rumored to be targeting a wide receiver or cornerback with a higher first round pick.

The Vikings lost wide receiver Percy Harvin and cornerback Antonie Winfield this offseason, creating a need at both positions. Even with the addition of Greg Jennings, the Vikings are still thin at receiver heading into 2013. Rapoport believes the Vikings could be targeting Tavon Austin or Cordarrelle Patterson. Mike Mayock noted on Thursday that Patterson might be available for the Vikings at No. 23 or No. 25, but was unsure Minnesota was willing to deal with the character concerns surrounding the Tennessee wide receiver. It is unlikely Austin, who has the skill set most similar to Harvin of anyone in the draft, would be available at No. 23.

The Vikings may also be interested in linebacker Manti Te’o with one of their first round picks according to Rapoport. With a variety of needs it is unlikely the Vikings would be willing to part with both of their first round picks to move up in the draft. Expect Minnesota to try to package one of those first round picks and a later round pick in an attempt to move up a few spots. The Vikings currently hold the No. 23, No. 25, No. 52, No. 83, No. 102, No. 120, No. 155, No. 189, No. 213, No. 214, and No. 229 picks in the draft.
