2013 NFL Draft: Steelers bring in defensive prospects for visits

Pittsburgh met with five defensive draft prospects they might consider selecting at various points of the 2013 NFL Draft, including Georgia linebacker Jarvis Jones.

Dale Zanine-US PRESSWIRE

The Pittsburgh Steelers met with five draft prospects recently, all of them defensive players, as they prepare for the 2013 NFL Draft, according to Bob Labriola. The top prospect the Steelers met with is Georgia linebacker Jarvis Jones; they also met with Rutgers linebacker Khaseem Greene, Southern Mississippi linebacker Jamie Collins, Clemson safety Jonathan Meeks, and Fresno State safety Phillip Thomas. Each NFL team is allowed to bring in 30 non-local players for pre-draft visits.

Jones is the No. 9 player on the Mocking the Draft big board and the latest mock draft has him going to the New Orleans Saints with the No. 15 pick, two spots before the Steelers first selection. Jones is one of three linebackers Pittsburgh has met with as the Steelers look to replace James Harrison. Greene and Collins rank as the No. 32 and No. 33 players on the big board, respectively.

Meeks and Thomas are both safeties who Pittsburgh won't look at with their first round pick, but may try to select later in the draft. Troy Polamalu struggled with injuries last year and the Steelers lost Will Allen this offseason, opening the need for a quality backup.

The Steelers have eight picks in the upcoming draft: No. 17, No. 48, No. 79, No. 115, No. 150, No. 186, No. 206 and No. 223.
