2013 NFL Draft team needs: Cleveland Browns

Adding young players to Ray Horton’s new defensive scheme is a top priority for the Browns.

The Cleveland Browns finished the 2012 season with a 5-11 record and ranked near the bottom of the league offensively and defensively. The season resulted in the firing of head coach Pat Shurmur, but there is reason to be optimistic about a team that showed promising signs from young players.

With young pieces in place on offense, the team can instead look to improve on defense in the 2013 NFL Draft as new defensive coordinator Ray Horton implements a new 3-4 system.

Top three needs

Cornerback - The Browns have to feel pretty comfortable with former-top 10 selection, Joe Haden, on one side of the secondary, but they entered the offseason with a hole on the other side. While the team added Chris Owens and Kevin Barnes, neither are too encouraging as starters and the addition of a top cornerback would be a positive.

Linebacker - With a new defensive scheme on the way, the Browns will need to load up on talent that better fits into a 3-4 front. While the additions of Paul Kruger and Quentin Groves addressed this, there is still building to be done.

Guard - The right side of the offensive line is solid for the Browns, but there is reason to be considered about the status of left guard Jason Pinkston. After a blood clot in his lung ended his 2012 season, the Browns were able to fill the void with John Greco, but it's apparent that a long-term plan and further depth at the position could be beneficial.

Ideal pick: D.J. Hayden, CB, Houston
