2013 NFL Mock Draft: Mayock projects Eric Fisher No. 1, Geno Smith to Browns

USA TODAY Sports

In his final mock draft for 2013, NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock has a few surprise choices.

One of the choices he ran with that is becoming more common is Central Michigan left tackle Eric Fisher being the first overall pick. Barely recruited out of high school, Fisher has become the choice for the Chiefs by the likes of Mayock, Jay Glazer of Fox Sports and Albert Breer of NFL Network.

As quarterback Geno Smith of West Virginia has fallen out of some mock drafts, Mayock keeps him in the top 10. Smith is sent to the Cleveland Browns with the sixth overall pick. Peter King of Sports Illustrated also has the Browns taking Smith in his mock draft, albeit in a trade down. Mayock wasn’t particularly enthused about Smith going in the first round.

I would not take him this early; I would go for an edge or a corner. However, I really think Joe Banner might pull the trigger on the quarterback from West Virginia.

Another interesting choice Mayock made was Buffalo with the eighth pick. While everyone else tries to decide between quarterbacks Ryan Nassib and Matt Barkley, Mayock went with West Virginia wide receiver Tavon Austin.

One of the moves in Mayock’s mock that causes pause is Utah defensive tackle Star Lotulelei falling all the way down to the Cowboys with the 18th overall pick. It seems the draft “floor” for Lotulelei is the Panthers in the 14th pick. If he were to get to Dallas, that would have to be considered the steal of the draft.

A few other surprise additions in Mayock’s mock: Syracuse guard/tackle Justin Pugh and Stanford tight end Zach Ertz. They’re often slotted into the second round.
