NFL Draft grades 2013: Star Lotulelei, Kenny Vaccaro, Desmond Trufant graded highly

How many divisions are there where everybody is happy with their pick?

The team in the division that didn’t earn praise the day after the draft is the Buccaneers, who dealt their first-round pick away -- although they ended up with Darrelle Revis, who isn’t such a bad defensive backfield player himself.

So let’s take a peek at how various experts -- and the fanbases of the teams selecting -- feel about the NFC South’s selections? We looked at four graders -- Dan Kadar of SB Nation’s Mocking the Draft, Rob Rang at CBS, Pete Prisco at CBS, Chris Burke at SI.

Kadar: A+

It’s tough to find a pick better received than the Panthers’ decision to pick Lotulelei. A defensive tackle out of Utah who combines monstrous size and physical ability with great technique and versatility, Lotulelei slipped all the way down to No. 14, possibly due to concerns over heart problems, even though doctors have cleared him to play. All that made the Panthers’ choice extremely easy. He fits a team need as the squad was trying to bulk up their front line, and he’s massively more valuable than what Carolina expected out of the 14th pick. Unsurprisingly, they’re thrilled about the developments over at Cat Scratch Reader.

There’s also a general consensus that Vaccaro wasn’t a bad move for the Saints. A 6’0 safety who can cover a receiver, step up to make hits against the run, and play centerfield. Safety wasn’t necessarily a huge team need, but Vaccaro will bolster a defense that needs some bolstering, and the Saints got him around the slot where he was expected to be selected. New Orleans opted to pass on Jarvis Jones, who would have filled a team need at outside linebacker, but landing a player as solid as Vaccaro should be well received.

It was pretty obvious the Falcons were going to go with a cornerback after the team lost both Brent Grimes and Dunta Robinson. A team with Super Bowl hopes couldn’t very well go into the season with a hole as glaring as the one the Falcons had at cornerback. So they found their man -- Trufant, a speedster with a pair of brothers in the NFL -- and keyed in on him. That makes it a really successful pick for the Falcons, from all perspectives. The only question about the pick was whether the team needed to make a trade to get their man -- a reasonable cornerback might have fallen to the Falcons at 30, but they gave up a third-rounder and a sixth-rounder to ensure they’d land Trufant. Perhaps a bit excessive, but perhaps worth it.
