2013 NFL mock draft: Zach Ertz to San Francisco 49ers

Zach Ertz played for Jim Harbaugh at Stanford. Might he get the opportunity again?

Steve Dykes

The San Francisco 49ers have been one of the best teams in football for two years, and that’s not likely to change for a good long while - except if, you know, they win the Super Bowl. They lost Delanie Walker this off-season, so obviously they’re going to be in prime position to draft his replacement, and probably get a better prospect at that.

David Fucillo: "The San Francisco 49ers let Delanie Walker walk in free agency, leaving them with Vernon Davis and Garrett Celek. While Davis is a great tight end, the 49ers use a lot of two and three tight end sets. Even if Anquan Boldin helps move them more to three wide receiver sets, Ertz is a play-maker who can add considerable depth and versatility to the tight end position. His blocking is a bit of a question mark, but he would be learning from one of the best blocking tight ends in the league in Davis."

Here’s our own Dan Kadar to break down the pick:

At this point, Ertz could be classified more as a wide receiver than a tight end. He’s not much of a blocker and was used predominantly outside at Stanford. Although that was partly due to scheme and the Cardinal having three good tight ends, Ertz shouldn’t be relied on to block for the first couple years of his career. Still, Jim Harbaugh recruited him in college and knows him better than anyone in the draft, save for Colts offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton. There’s nothing bad about the pick, though. Ertz would pretty easily be able to match or top Walker’s 21 catches last season. While he’s not going to be a special teams player like Walker, Ertz can further open up the offense.

The Philadelphia Eagles and Bleeding Green Nation will be the last team to dip their toes into the Round 2 waters before our weekend sabbatical. Their pick airs at 3PM, and then we'll pick things back up on Monday morning.
