NFL Draft talk: Rounding up mock drafts

Mock drafts are everywhere, so here are a few favorites. Also, Jadeveon Clowney predicts his 40 time and it is crazy.

Mock drafts are updating fast and furious on nearly a weekly basis. If you haven’t seen it yet, Matthew Fairburn put up his latest mock draft on Monday.

The crew from CBS Sports – Dane Brugler, Pete Prisco and Rob Rang – put out new mocks on Tuesday. It’s interesting to note that Brugler and Rang still have Fresno State quarterback Derek Carr as a top-10 choice. Prisco doesn’t even have him in the first round.

Daniel Jeremiah of NFL Network also updated his mock draft this week, sticking with Jadeveon Clowney as the No. 1 pick. Jeremiah's cohort Charles Davis also put in an update on his mock, and Minnesota Vikings fans may like it.

This isn't a slight against anyone who does a mock draft (because I'm guilty too), but these are all starting to look a little familiar. For instance, just about every mock draft will have either tight end Jace Amaro or a Notre Dame defensive lineman for the New England Patriots. The Baltimore Ravens are often slotted with the best available wide receiver or Alabama offensive tackle Cyrus Kouandjio.

The NFL Scouting Combine next week and the start of free agency will change things up dramatically.

By the way, next Monday’s SB Nation mock draft was put together collaboratively with myself and Fairburn. I had the odd picks and he took the evens. Some of the picks are a little unique. As always, if you have a mock draft, feel free to share it in the comments.

Michael Lombardi to New England?

After being fired by the Cleveland Browns on Tuesday, Michael Lombardi is reportedly headed to New England in some capacity. Lombardi’s role isn’t clear, but he’s expected to be an executive of some type. Or is he? Ian Rapoport of NFL Network says the two sides are merely in discussions.

Metrics and cornerbacks

Some of the best work leading up to the draft this year is being done by Greg Peshek on Rotoworld. If you're not following him on Twitter, he's @NU_Gap. He's a big-time stat guy and has been using analytics to break down draft prospects. His latest is on the second tier of cornerbacks – Kyle Fuller, Victor Hampton, Stanley Jean-Baptiste, Lamarcus Joyner and Loucheiz Purifoy.

Out of those five players, Fuller came out with the best numbers.

Clowney on critics

There are critics out there who question Jadeveon Clowney for his lack of stats in 2013. Now Clowney is speaking out.

“People are going to say what they want to say. I bet half of the people that are talking can’t play football,” Clowney said via Yahoo Sports. “They just see what they see, or don’t know nothing about the game. I just get a laugh out of it.”

So there doubters, Clowney is laughing at you. He also hopes to run a 4.4 40-yard dash at the combine. If that happens, the Internet might explode.
