Cleveland Browns coach Mike Pettine wants to quiet ‘noise’

There are plenty of negatives with the Browns. Their new coach wants to quiet them.

INDIANAPOLIS - Mike Pettine hasn’t even coached a game yet for the Cleveland Browns, but his position is already mired in controversy.

On Friday, Pro Football Talk reported the Browns wanted to trade draft picks to the San Francisco 49ers for head coach Jim Harbaugh.

Pettine said he was warned in advance about the report coming out.

“I shot the messenger a little,” Pettine said. “I used a word proceeded by the word flying. And I don’t give a rat’s.”

Much of Pettine’s press conference was eliminating the negativity often associated with the Browns.

“That’s something that has no bearing on my job moving forward,” Pettine said. “A big part of being a head coach is dealing with the noise.”

For Pettine, the noise has already been deafening. In addition to the Harbaugh rumors, the Browns fired Michael Lombardi and CEO Joe Banner is leaving the team.

They’re the two people who hired Pettine and they are being replaced by new general manager Ray Farmer.

“If it’s not something that will affect my ability to lead the Cleveland Browns, it’s not something I’ll worry about,” Pettine said. “I’m full speed ahead with Ray Farmer. We have a shared vision that neither of us had to stray far from our core philosophy. Football A-Z, even though he’s a Duke guy and I’m a Virginia guy, we see things the same.”
