After months of mock drafts, the 2016 NFL Draft is around the corner and the final predictions for the first round on Thursday are rolling in.
Here are the biggest mock draft takeaways before the 2016 NFL Draft
After tracking mock drafts for more than two months, some picks are predictable but others are still anyone’s guess.
Here at SB Nation, we’ve been tracking and charting every major mock draft since February to see which player each team is projected to take. Trades involving the first two picks shook things up in April, sending the Tennessee Titans and Cleveland Browns down the draft order and launching the Los Angeles Rams and Philadelphia Eagles.
But now that the dust has settled, there are a few takeaways before the Rams go on the clock at No. 1:
Most popular pairings
After the first two picks, which are overwhelmingly projected to be Jared Goff to the Los Angeles Rams and Carson Wentz to the Philadelphia Eagles, there are only a few pairings of player and team that are in the majority of mock drafts.
Vernon Hargreaves to the Buccaneers
The Buccaneers struggled to stop opposing passers in 2015, and benched both Alterraun Verner and Johnthan Banks at points during the season. The addition of Brent Grimes adds to the secondary, but it’s far from a solution for Tampa Bay. So adding a playmaking cornerback makes for a logical pick.
While Jameis Winston would prefer his former Florida State teammate Jalen Ramsey, it seems doubtful that he’s available at the end of the top 10. Instead, the majority of mock drafts have the Buccaneers slated to take Winston’s former college rival Vernon Hargreaves, who played for Florida.
Sheldon Rankins to the Saints
The Saints need to upgrade the defense and have needed to for a long time. No team allowed more points, more passing touchdowns or more yards per rushing attempt in 2015, and it’ll take more than adding James Laurinaitis, Nathan Stupar and Nick Fairley to patch the whole thing up.
But a player like Rankins could boost both the pass defense and run defense, and he could give the Saints a cog in the middle of their defensive line to work around. The 299-pound defensive tackle is perfect for a 4-3 and is the type of penetrating player who can create interior pressure on quarterbacks.
Some teams are impossible to predict
When there isn’t one clear-cut favorite like the Rams, Eagles, Buccaneers or Saints, sometimes there are just a few possibilities that experts are divided on. In the case of the Minnesota Vikings, four wide receivers split almost the entire chart and a small group of others round out the possibilities.
But some teams don’t have a distinct need that has to be addressed and it leads to mock drafts tossing out all kinds of names. Unsurprisingly, it’s near the end of the draft order that the “others” category starts to grow.
Leading the way are the Kansas City Chiefs at No. 28. The 2015 playoff team is paired with over 30 different names and doesn’t have a single player taking up more than a quarter of the chart.
Consensus mock draft
The database will continue to be updated until the first round begins on Thursday night, but with 100 mock drafts surveyed, we can look at how the first 31 picks are projected to go.
