2017 NFL mock draft: Buffalo Bills go for receiver Corey Davis

With the 10th pick, Buffalo can’t go wrong with a pass catcher.

Today we close out the first 10 picks in the SB Nation NFL writers’ mock draft with the Buffalo Bills. Each of our 32 team sites are making the picks for their respective teams over two rounds leading up to this year’s NFL draft. If you’ve missed any selections, find them all here.

Making the pick for the Bills is the collective staff at Buffalo Rumblings. You have to think that they were dealt a bit of a blow when the Carolina Panthers picked tight end O.J. Howard at No. 8 overall. Still, though, there are plenty of receiver options available.

10. Bills: Corey Davis, WR, Western Michigan

Buffalo Rumblings: In this situation, with the first nine picks falling this way, a trade back would be ideal. For the sake of this mock -- without trades -- Corey Davis is the Bills pick. There was plenty of back-and-forth between Davis and power forward-type wide out Mike Williams, but Davis won out due to his ability after the catch.

In the West Coast offense Buffalo will use under new offensive coordinator Rick Dennison, Davis’ tremendous ability to create big plays after the ball is in his hands on shorter routes will be a welcomed addition to the Bills offense. At nearly 6’3 and 209 pounds, he brings a “big wide receiver” element to Buffalo, too.

Davis has squeaky clean film and was producing at a high level at a young age in college and has matured into the complete package at wide receiver. Tyrod Taylor (and Sammy Watkins) will be ecstatic.

Analysis: Whether it’s Davis, Williams, or even John Ross of Washington, the Bills can’t go wrong picking a wide receiver with the 10th pick. It’s just a matter of figuring out which player the Bills need the most. My lean would have been Williams solely because he can work vertically a little better than Davis. The margin between the two is razor thin — I have Williams rated as the 10th-best player in the drat and Davis 11th — so either would have been a fine choice.

He’s a bit of a liability in the run game, but his potential in the pass game was enough for Buffalo Rumblings.
