One reason for optimism, one reason for pessimism for every NFL team

Why every NFL fanbase should be optimistic and pessimistic about 2025

One of the things the National Football League does best is package hope. Between free agency, the NFL Draft, the salary cap, and the league’s general push towards parity, almost every fan has a reason to be optimistic when a new season begins.

However, behind every bit of optimism looms pessimism. For everything break that can go a team’s way, two more could go against them. That is the nature of life in the NFL.

We are going to lean into that philosophy this morning, by outlining one reason for optimism, and one reason for pessimism, for each of the teams in the NFL.

Arizona Cardinals

Optimism: Jonathan Gannon has been quietly building a heck of a defense in Arizona, and they could be one of the more dominant units in the NFL this season. Couple that with the growth of Marvin Harrison Jr. and this team could be dangerous on offense.

Pessimism: The NFC West remains absolutely brutal, and it’s difficult to see how the Cardinals hang with either the 49ers or Rams inside the division.

Atlanta Falcons

Optimism: Michael Penix Jr. showed flashes in his three starts last season, and his connection with Drake London could power this offense to big numbers.

Pessimism: Quarterback development is not linear, and while we expect Penix to take a big step forward this season that might not materialize, which could hold this offense back as a result.

Baltimore Ravens

Optimism: With Lamar Jackson the Ravens have a former MVP at quarterback. Derrick Henry gives this offense an incredible element in the running game, and the Ravens have weapons in the passing game at WR and TE that can cause problems for defense at every level.

Pessimism: We could have said all those things last year … and yet in a deep AFC those reasons for optimism were not enough to get over the top.

Buffalo Bills

Optimism: You have the reigning MVP at quarterback and an incredible defense. There’s no reason to doubt the Bills will be in the mix for a deep playoff run once again.

Pessimism: The Chiefs still exist, and they’re your kryptonite.

Carolina Panthers

Optimism: Bryce Young is ready to take the next step, and this season he starts with confidence, and a really solid group of receivers who are poised to make an impact.

Pessimism: Outside of Derrick Brown and Jaycee Horn the defense is about as strong as wet toilet paper.

Optimism: Early returns are promising for the Ben Johnson-Caleb Williams pairing. If he becomes the quarterback Chicago fans are hoping for, watch out.

Pessimism: Even if Williams takes a big step forward, the NFC North is one of the league’s toughest divisions and the Bears have the seventh-toughest schedule.

Cincinnati Bengals

Optimism: As we saw a season ago, with Joe Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase, and Tee Higgins this offense can score points in bunches. Usually that is enough to win football games in the NFL.

Pessimism: However, as we also saw a season ago scoring points is not enough when your defense truly struggles. With Trey Hendrickson’s contract situation lingering and questions continuing to swirl around the Bengals defense again, if they struggle like they did in 2024, it might be too much for the offense to overcome.

Cleveland Browns

Optimism: They have Myles Garrett, and that is sometimes enough on the defensive side of the football.

Pessimism: Their starting quarterback is in Schofield’s age bracket. Add to that one of the league’s toughest schedules and you have a rather poor combination.

Dallas Cowboys

Optimism: Like always, the Cowboys have one of the better rosters on paper entering the season without a lot of glaring weaknesses.

Pessimism: Games aren’t won on paper, and Micah Parsons might be gone.

Denver Broncos

Optimism: The Denver Broncos made the playoffs with Bo Nix as a rookie starter. He’s back and should take a step forward in Year Two, and the Broncos still have one of the best defenses in the league to bail him out if mistakes happen.

Pessimism: Nix looked … shaky against the San Francisco 49ers backups in limited action in his first preseason game, and if he struggles, the defense might need to be near-perfect for the Broncos to keep pace in a talented division.

Detroit Lions

Optimism: After a brutal rash of injuries decimated the Detroit defense a season ago, players like Aidan Hutchinson are back and healthy for 2025. That might be enough to push them over the top this season.

Pessimism: A combination of brain drain – Ben Johnson leaving for Chicago and Aaron Glenn for the Jets – and a difficult division means there is minimal room for error.

Green Bay Packers

Optimism: The stage is set for the Packers to take a big step in 2025 with more pieces being added all over the depth chart to turn this team into a potential division-winner.

Pessimism: There’s real pressure coming from all sides in the NFC North and if this team stumbles they could find themselves at last in the division.

Houston Texans

Optimism: C.J. Stroud made it past his sophomore slump and has serious weapons that should make life much easier for him. In a weak AFC South the Texans should be able to cement themselves as the class of the division.

Pessimism: The offensive line is extremely suspect, and got even worse after allowing 52 sacks a year ago.

Indianapolis Colts

Optimism: They named a starting quarterback in Daniel Jones, solidifying that position after a few seasons of uncertainty.

Optimism: Having a new coach is always exciting. This is the moment for Trevor Lawrence to ascend with Brian Thomas Jr. and Travis Hunter.

Pessimism: What if they don’t get any better and the struggle bus is just the norm for this team?

Kansas City Chiefs

Optimism: These are still the Kansas City Chiefs. Despite their loss in the Super Bowl last February they have Patrick Mahomes, Andy Reid, Travis Kelce and company back for another run.

Pessimism: The Chiefs are also a year older, and the rest of the division seems to be inching closer and closer to them. This could be the year one of their rivals finally catches them.

Las Vegas Raiders

Optimism: Pete Carroll is a culture builder who knows how to develop a winner. Ashton Jeanty is a possible OROY candidate and the defense is solid. There’s a lot of really solid pieces all over this roster, and Carroll is the kind of coach who can elevate them.

Pessimism: The AFC West is absolutely brutal, and a building year could mean that the Raiders still finish at the bottom of the west.

Los Angeles Chargers

Optimism: Justin Herbert remains one of the game’s top talents at the quarterback position, and they have one of the best secondaries in the NFL right now. That usually makes for a winning combination in today’s NFL.

Pessimism: They’re still the Chargers and some might argue that the “Chargering” has already begun, with Rashawn Slater out for the season with a Patellar injury and Najee Harris working back from a Fourth of July fireworks incident.

Los Angeles Rams

Optimism: Matthew Stafford’s back is completely healed by Week 1, and the Rams begin the year with one of the game’s best quarterbacks ready to go.

Pessimism: Matthew Stafford’s back issues linger into the season, he misses significant time, and this becomes the Jimmy Garoppolo show.

Miami Dolphins

Optimism: Tua Tagovailoa is healthy, you still have Tyreek Hill, and the offense should get back on track in 2025 to be one of the league’s most exciting, and unique units.

Pessimism: The team has no depth to weather issues that arise, and Tua could literally get hurt at the drop of a hat.

Minnesota Vikings

Optimism: Regardless of how J.J. McCarthy plays as he takes over as the starting quarterback, Minnesota’s defense remains one of the best units in the NFL and powers the Vikings this year.

Pessimism: J.J. McCarthy stumbles as the starting quarterback and the defense cannot overcome a sputtering offense.

New England Patriots

Optimism: Bolstered by a number of additions on the offensive side of the football, including wide receiver Stefon Diggs and rookies TreVeyon Henderson and Will Campbell, along with the presence of new offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, Drake Maye takes a massive step forward in 2025.

Pessimism: What if he doesn’t?

New Orleans Saints

Optimism: Arch Manning might be the top pick in the 2026 NFL Draft!

Pessimism: Arch Manning might stay at Texas.

New York Giants

Optimism: Abdul Carter looks like a bonafide NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year candidate and Jaxson Dart has impressed so far this preseason.

Pessimism: The Giants have one of the league’s toughest schedules, including an opening stretch that sees them open at Washington and at Dallas before coming home for games against the Chiefs and the Chargers. On paper at least, their only likely win before Halloween comes in Week 5 against the Saints. That is … rough.

New York Jets

Optimism: You’re not relying on Aaron Rodgers anymore.

Pessimism: You’re now relying on Justin Fields.

Philadelphia Eagles

Optimism: The Eagles have one of the game’s best offensive lines, a force in Saquon Barkley, a quarterback in Jalen Hurts who is perfect for the modern game, and the league’s top defense in DVOA from a season ago.

Pessimism: It is difficult to repeat. Very difficult. And with the fourth-toughest schedule ahead of them and the Washington Commanders nipping at their heels, the Eagles do not have room for many mistakes.

Pittsburgh Steelers

Optimism: Aaron Rodgers might be the team’s best quarterback since Ben Roethlisberger.

Pessimism: Aaron Rodgers might be the team’s best quarterback since Ben Roethlisberger, but can he rebound at this point in his career after two difficult seasons in New York?

San Francisco 49ers

Optimism: The return of Robert Saleh as defensive coordinator could see that unit take a huge step forward, giving them a defense to contend in today’s NFL.

Pessimism: At the moment San Francisco is dealing with significant injuries to their WR room, injuries that could hold this offense back over the course of a 17-game season.

Seattle Seahawks

Optimism: The Seattle Seahawks are on track to have one of the league’s best defenses.

Pessimism: They’ve put all their eggs in the Sam Darnold basket, but can he produce like he did a season ago without Kevin O’Connell on the sideline calling the shots?

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Optimism: The NFC South is still weak, and you’re the only team with an established roster that’s good enough to win. Baker Mayfield has elevated himself to a Top 10 QB, and you retained Chris Godwin to keep the offense clicking.

Pessimism: This still feels like a one-and-done team when the playoffs start.

Tennessee Titans

Optimism: Cam Ward might have the juice.

Pessimism: Even if Ward is the answer to the Titans’ quarterback woes, is this roster talented enough to do what the Commanders did a season ago, particularly on the defensive side of the football?

Washington Commanders

Optimism: The Commanders secured one of the modern NFL’s cheat codes last season, adding Jayden Daniels and giving them a window to contend with a rookie quarterback contract. They added around Daniels this offseason, putting them in position for another deep playoff run.

Pessimism: Are “vibes” a valid reason for pessimism? Because the Terry McLaurin situation remains unsettled heading into Week 1 and his absence could hold this offense back.
