The Saints did the worst ‘Philly Special’ ever.

The New Orleans Saints were expected to be one of the worst teams in the NFL entering the 2025 regular season, and while they are enter Week 4 as one of six winless teams, they have been a little more feisty than expected. The Saints were on the doorstep of taking a lead against the heavily favored Buffalo Bills just before halftime, and they decided to get a little tricky. Unfortunately, it turned into one of the most embarrassing plays of the season so far.

The Saints drew up the ‘Philly Special’ on a third-and-goal from the Buffalo six-yard-line with 91 seconds left in the second quarter. Star wide receiver Chris Olave received the pitch and tried to throw the ball into the end zone for QB Spencer Rattler, but Buffalo was all over it. Bills safety Cole Bishop jumped the route and picked off the pass. Watch the play here:

The Eagles famously used this play to score a key touchdown against the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII with QB Nick Foles catching the pass. Those Eagles were an elite team, and the Saints are the inverse. Only a team as bad as New Orleans could call this play and have it end up in a humiliating interception.

Here’s a look at the Eagles’ classic ‘Philly Special’ from that Super Bowl. The Illinois Fighting Illini pulled off a successful Philly Special one day earlier in their win over USC. Bad teams find ways to lose, and sadly the Saints are still a bad team even if they’ve been pretty competitive so far.
