Russell Wilson blasts Sean Payton as ‘classless’ after Giants-Broncos

Sean Payton vs. Russell Wilson is the NFL’s newest beef

We have some fresh NFL beef, it seems …

The most dramatic game of the Week 7 slate came in the late Sunday window, as the Denver Broncos scored 33 points in the fourth quarter to pull out an audacious 33-32 comeback victory over the New York Giants. Denver trailed 19-0 when the fourth quarter began, and the Broncos were down 26-8 with less than six minutes to go.

As the CBS Sports broadcast pointed out, NFL teams had won 1,602 consecutive games when leading by 18 points in the final six minutes of a game.

Denver quarterback Bo Nix also became the first player in NFL history to throw for two touchdowns and run for two more touchdowns in a single fourth quarter, as Sean Payton finally won a game where his team was being shut out and trailed by at least ten points going into halftime. Before Sunday’s comeback, Payton was 0-15 in that scenario.

After the game, Payton seemed to throw some shade at his former quarterback, current New York Giants backup Russell Wilson. Referencing new starting quarterback Jaxson Dart, Payton let it slip that he told Giants owner John Mara he was hoping the Giants made a quarterback switch after the Denver game:

Today, Wilson offered his response.

Referencing “Bountygate,” the investigation into alleged bounties offered up for New Orleans Saints players that resulted in Payton being suspended for the entire 2012 season, Wilson had this to say about his former coach:

Wilson spent one year in Denver under Payton, the 2023 season, during which Wilson started 15 games and went 7-8 for the Broncos. The veteran quarterback was benched late that season, with two games remaining on Denver’s schedule.

It’s safe to say they are probably not exchanging holiday cards this year.
