NFL playoff picture: What does Jaguars-Jets mean for AFC standings in Week 15

The Jaguars face the Jets in Jacksonville on Sunday. We break down what the game means for the NFL playoff picture in Week 15.

NFL: Jacksonville Jaguars at New York Jets

Update: Jacksonville pummeled New York 48-20 to improve to 10-4 on the season. The Jags maintained their one-game lead on the Texans for first place in the AFC South and are now just one game behind the Patriots for the No. 2 seed in the AFC.

The Jacksonville Jaguars secured first place in the AFC South last week against the Indianapolis Colts and now head into Week 15 looking to maintain their position. They host the New York Jets and are a 12.5-point favorite heading into the game.

Jacksonville is 9-4 and coming off a 36-19 win over the Colts. They’ve won four straight and five of their past six games. The one loss was to the Texans, which has left the door open in the AFC South. New York is 3-10 and saw a solid streak spoiled in Miami. After opening the season with seven straight losses, they won three of their next five. However, a 34-10 loss at home to Miami extinguished that momentum.

Jacksonville Jaguars playoff picture

The Jaguars have a one game lead over the Texans and Colts. Jacksonville split the season series with Houston. They beat Indianapolis last week and have one more game against them in Week 18. The Texans host the Cardinals in Week 15 and are a 9.5-point favorite. The Colts travel to face the Seahawks and are a 13.5-point underdog.

AFC South standings
  1. Jacksonville Jaguars: 9-4
  2. Houston Texans: 8-5
  3. Indianapolis Colts: 8-5
  4. Tennessee Titans: 2-11

The Jaguars are in third place in the overall AFC standings. Among the division leaders, they are two games back of the Broncos and Patriots and two games up on the Steelers. In Week 15, the Broncos host the Packers and are a 2.5-point underdog, the Patriots host the Bills and are a 1.5-point underdog, and the Steelers host the Dolphins and are a 3.5-point favorite.

Jacksonville would drop into the wild card if they lost and Houston won in Week 15 due to the division record tiebreaker.

AFC playoff standings
  1. Denver Broncos: 11-2
  2. New England Patriots: 11-2
  3. Jacksonville Jaguars: 9-4
  4. Pittsburgh Steelers: 7-6
  5. Los Angeles Chargers: 9-4
  6. Buffalo Bills: 9-4
  7. Houston Texans: 8-5
  8. Indianapolis Colts: 8-5
  9. Baltimore Ravens: 6-7
  10. Kansas City Chiefs: 6-7
  11. Miami Dolphins: 6-7

Tiebreaker implications

The Jaguars are the only AFC South team with the Jets on their schedule. This game could impact the strength of victory tiebreaker, but would not impact common games in the division. The Broncos and Patriots both played the Jets, so it would impact it there. The Jaguars face the Broncos in Week 16, so the head-to-head tiebreaker will be the difference there.
