Mike McCarthy’s Aaron Rodgers quote hints at Steelers coach’s plan at QB

Mike McCarthy isn’t very subtle.

Monday was a moving day at historic Lambeau Field, as the Green Bay Packers community said goodbye to former team president and CEO Bob Harlan during a public celebration of life ceremony.

But his son, sportscaster Kevin Harlan, could not turn off his journalistic mind.

During the celebration the sportscaster was interviewing new Pittsburgh Steelers head coach — and former Packers head coach — Mike McCarthy. That’s when Harlan asked McCarthy about another former member of the Green Bay family, quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

And whether McCarthy would be reunited with him in Pittsburgh.

“Yes, it would be a great story,” McCarthy said, via ESPN’s Rob Demovsky who was in attendance. “I don’t know — and I would love to tell everybody with breaking news. But, you know, it’s really cool to see Aaron at 42. To see a young man at 22 and all of what he’s been able to accomplish and where he’s at in his personal life, and trying to make this decision. He’s in a really good place.”

You can see the entire exchange here:

This is not the first time McCarthy has addressed the veteran quarterback’s status since being hired. During his introductory press conference, McCarthy sounded downright giddy at the chance to coach Rodgers again.

“Definitely. I don’t see why you wouldn’t,” said McCarthy back in January when he was asked if he wanted to coach Rodgers again, adding that he “watched most of the Pittsburgh games on TV, and I thought he was a great asset for the team.”

Rodgers has yet to make a decision about his future. But once again, we have evidence on where McCarthy stands. It sure sounds like the head coach wants Rodgers back in Pittsburgh. Now the ball is in the 42-year-old’s court.
